RH - Grassy Ridge Spring Green 2014.jpg
After passing through the longest stretch of grassy balds (highland meadow) in the entire Appalachian range--including Round Bald, Engine Gap and Jane's Bald--a spur trail off the Appalachian National Scenic Trail brings hikers to Grassy Ridge Bald. During the month of June this area is known for profuse and widely scattered blooms of Catawba Rhododendron, hearty shrubs that flower in various shades of pink and magenta along the mountainsides. This photograph, taken at first light of day, looks over blooming Catawba Rhododendron and out towards the distant Linville Gorge Wilderness Area of Western North Carolina.
