VA - Great Falls Potomac River Sunrise.jpg
The Potomac River forms the state border for Virginia and Maryland. Roughly fifteen miles upstream of Washington D.C., the Potomac River encounters the fall line--the transition from Appalachian Piedmont to Coastal Plain--narrowing down from nearly fifteen hundred feet wide to less than one hundred feet wide in places; losing seventy plus feet of elevation; and squeezing into the narrow Mather Gorge--a rugged, arrow straight set of cliffs--before evening out, calming and entering the Nation's Capital en route to the Chesapeake Bay. This photograph was taken from Great Falls National Park in Fairfax County, Northern Virginia.
