Fog is a common occurrence in the high (relative) elevation Roan Highlands along the state borders of Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee. During the month of June, beautiful pink and magenta Catawba Rhododendron blooms dot the mountainsides. Access to the highland meadows is by foot: the Appalachian National Scenic Trail and associated spur trails carry visitors through the Roan Highlands along the ridgelines.
